Mandate
Built in the heart of Quebec City in 1937, CANAC Stadium is an iconic venue steeped in history and a major landmark for the city. Today, the stadium is home to the Quebec Capitales baseball team.
The project involved a complete 3D scan of CANAC Stadium, including all interior and exterior spaces of the facility. The goal was to document the existing structure in order to produce an accurate 3D model of the stadium. The scope of work also included detailed scanning of the building’s roof and gutters, ensuring complete coverage of the building envelope and structure.

Proposition
In order to establish a reliable geometric baseline and compile a comprehensive documentation of the station, we propose a methodology centered on a control network, followed by LiDAR scanning attached and corrected by the same reference frame.
GNSS Georeferencing and control network
We measure high-precision GNSS-georeferenced control points to establish a robust anchor to the project’s coordinate system. This step ensures a stable reference for all data acquisitions.
A control network is also established and strategically distributed with control points. The entire network is tied to the GNSS network.
Terrestrial LiDAR
Terrestrial LiDAR is used to measure the exterior of the stadium using high-density scanning stations. This method allows for the precise capture of even the smallest details of the metal structure above the bleachers.
Terrestrial LiDAR also serves as the basis for verticality and deformation analyses. All stations are tied and adjusted to the control network to ensure the consistency and accuracy of the overall project.
Mobile LiDAR (SLAM)
SLAM-based mobile LiDAR scanning is then used to document and scan the interior of the building. The data is also registered and aligned with the control network.
This method allows for the precise capture of key architectural elements such as floors, walls, beams, and columns, while also documenting in detail the equipment present in mechanical rooms, including piping, ducts, boilers, tanks, and other visible technical components.
Drone scanning
A drone survey is conducted using a high-resolution camera to document the stadium’s roof. The images captured cover the entire roof, including structural elements and gutters.
Virtual re-visit
The virtual tour is generated using mobile SLAM scanning. A 360° panoramic image is captured every four to five steps to create an immersive, seamless, and accurate tour of all the scanned spaces.
Deliverables
Point cloud in colour
Data from terrestrial LiDAR surveys, mobile SLAM surveys, and drone surveys can be used to create a unified, color-coded point cloud that serves as a basis for measurement, coordination, and drafting.
Online virtual visit
A virtual re-visit available to professionals working on the project allows them to take measurements, add comments, and navigate directly within the project. The virtual tour also includes hundreds of panoramic images that reveal every detail of the building.
Deformation analysis
Using precise LiDAR data, we measure and visualize surface irregularities that are invisible to the naked eye.
Orthophotos
These high-resolution images are captured and downloaded from the drone. They have a resolution of 3 mm per pixel.
