Mandate

The mandate was to carry out a complete 3D scan of the Toyota dealership in Montmagny, to accurately document its current condition and produce a detailed point cloud. In this context, Atelier 21 commissioned us to perform a 3D scan of the building’s interior and exterior, with the goal of producing an accurate set of reference data for the architectural team.

This aims at helping the architecture team with any current or future interventions, be it interior or exterior.

Proposition

GNSS Georeferencing and Control Network

We measure control points using a high-precision GNSS system to establish a robust anchor to the project’s coordinate system. Control points placed on the envelope are then measured with a high precision and high accuracy total station to limit LiDAR and drone photogrammetry drift to only a few millimeters. Those points are also attached to the georeferencing previously provided by the GNSS.

This step ensures a stable reference for all data acquisitions.

Mobile LiDAR (SLAM) Interior and Exterior

We perform mobile SLAM-based LiDAR scanning inside and on the grounds of the building to obtain a comprehensive and detailed representation of the existing conditions. The SLAM data is then registered and adjusted using the control network to ensure a consistent, usable dataset tailored to the architects’ needs.

This method allows for a quick and efficient survey, all while conserving the precision and accuracy within the tolerances defined by DGTL and the architectural team.

Drone Survey

We conduct a photogrammetric survey using a drone equipped with a high-resolution camera to document the roof, which is difficult to access from the ground.

The images acquired are then tied to the primary control network. With these images, we generated a point cloud that accurately represents the observed surfaces.

Point Cloud Assembly

Using terrestrial LiDAR and drone-based photogrammetric control points, we merge the point clouds produced by each technology to generate a single, comprehensive point cloud.

The final point cloud is exported in Recap format, allowing it to be integrated into Revit and AutoCAD to generate plans, sections, and elevations.

Deliverables

Coloured Point Cloud

Delivery of a colour point cloud generated from mobile LiDAR and photogrammetric data, covering both the interior and exterior of the building. Aligned with the control network, it provides an accurate and reliable measurement basis for analyses, inspections, and any future work.

Virtual Visit

A virtual tour is made available to the client through an online platform, allowing them to revisit the building at any time, take measurements, assess the existing conditions, add comments, and share the tour with any other stakeholders. This method is valued for its ease of sharing, user-friendliness, and the quality of its HDR images. 360° panoramic images are captured every four to five steps to create an immersive, seamless and accurate tour through all the digitized spaces.

Quality Report

An 18-page quality report accompanies the deliverables to document the entire process. It outlines the methodologies and technologies used throughout the project. The report also includes images taken during the survey, tables showing target locations, and comments on weather conditions.
